I grew up in the ghetto; I have family that are still in the ghetto. They looked at me like I was crazy when I told them that "I want to go for my Ph.D in computer science.". The first words to come out of their mouth "What, you think you're better than us? You ain't shit. It's all about making money, fuck that school shit." Well, here I am, I got a career in computer science, and I am slowly working on my degree; they are working dead-end jobs and still living in the gutter.

This is why you surround yourself with people that will bring positive things to your life and not ignorant people. I'm working on my bachelor's degree and if I were to ever get a reaction like that from one of my friends...guess what? That's the last time I'm speaking to his dumb ass. Surround yourself with intelligent positive people and your life will be better because of it. Shit just attracts more shit. Its a fact of life that I'm sure all of you are aware of.

@LTS1287 That's fine, but I think helping people, through whatever means, is not about want, need or motivation of the helper or helpee, it is about responsibility. This system doesn't acknowledge this fact and it shines through in your comment. I am not saying you are a bad person. That is clearly not the case. I am saying you are as much a victim as those who live in squalour, the only difference is you have the opportunity and responsibility to help - but you don't

@Pigroota: I never said that you shouldn't try to help your fellow man. However you have to realize that there are people in this world that don't want to be helped and do nothing to help themselves. If you spend your time trying to save the world you'll come to realize that you never took time to help yourself. Sometimes being a little selfish is a good thing. You can't please everyone and you can't help everyone. You can only help those that want to be helped.
