Canon Vixia HG20 HD Camcorder Test Video - Extreme Close Up Shots

NOTE:
This is not the "real" quality that this camcorder can produce. First render was in MPEG2 around 20000kbps, really high quality, but huge in size - 568MB, it was gonna take about 9~10 hrs to upload. So I had to render it in WMV at 6000kbps, hence the reduced quality and size - 181MB. But nevertheless, still looks good on YouTube.

Side Note:
Yes, I'm going to get a tripod. Sorry about the shaky hand.
First time making real video editing in Sony Vegas.
Monitor - 22" - at the beginning was running at 1680x1050, wallpaper as well.

Shot in:
1080p, 30FPS, every setting at default/automatic mode, optical image stabilization on, automatic focus assist on (not instant focus), no manual focus used.

Setting:
Afternoon, very cloudy, indoors and outdoors

Software/Hardware:
Windows 7 RC1 32bit, Sony Vegas Pro 9, rendered in WMV, 720p, 6099kbps, 192kbps audio, 20mins render time.
Self-built PC, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 at 2.40Ghz, 4GB RAM, 512MB 9800GT, Asus P5Q Pro.

  • I assume all the settings were auto...? How are the manual controls? The auto iris and focus sorta drew attention to themselves in this video, so I would prefer to keep them in manual. But, I don't want to drop the cash on this camera and find out the manual controls are bunk. Any input?

    Thanks for this video, btw.

Yes, all settings were on auto. The manual focus on this camera is utterly useless mainly because there's no dedicated manual focus ring/rocker/slider. You have to use the joystick next to the LCD - push it in brings up the menu, from there you can access the manual focus, then push the joystick left/right to adjust. It's a cumbersome process, the built-in mic can pick up the joystick button noise. The manual focus itself is quite good, but the way you adjust and access it isn't.

  • work with mac? final cut express 4?

  • What do you mean? The camcorder? or AVCHD (.mts file format)?

    In either case, yes.

No software/driver needed to import footage on a Mac, since it's USB2.0, your Mac shouldn't have any problem recognize the camcorder, it should show up as a massive storage device, from there you can access your video footage.

I believe Final Cut Express 4 HD supports AVCHD format natively.

  • I got this camcorder months ago still haven't got Adobe Premiere CS4, so I haven't done any editing yet...

  • You are talking about the Pro versions, low end versions are suffice enough for home video editing use. Go to their website, you will see.
