Drunk Steals Police Car

Date: the afternoon of November 15, 2006 (around 3-7 PM).

Just before 4:00 PM, a man going eastbound on State Route 520 was pulled over by an unmarked Washington State Patrol Car for not wearing a seatbelt. The Trooper suspected the male was intoxicated after talking to him, so the subject was handcuffed and put in back of the unmarked State Patrol Impala. Washington State Patrol Lt. Jeff Sass said, "The individual somehow was able to free himself, maneuver himself into a position where he was able to take the vehicle". The suspect drove with the emergency lights and sirens on until he got to Bel-Red Road in Bellevue when he got into a minor traffic accident, ditched the car at a apartment complex nearby, and fled into the woods which serve as a back yard to many of the residents in that area. The police were worried because the unmarked Impala was filled with multiple weapons, however it was later discovered none were missing. Bellevue police took over the search for the suspect (that possibly had a warrant for a felony) from the Washington State Patrol. The neighborhood there went into lock down and the streets were closed off. A K9 unit was brought in to find the suspect. A little after 5:00 PM, with media helicopters overhead and news-crews on the ground, the man was found, arrested, and booked at Washington State Patrol Bellevue-headquarters.

Personal note: I followed this situation almost from the beginning on my scanner and it was pretty exciting. However, I did get into a small argument/confrontation with one of the State Patrol Troopers about where I was allowed to be. Oh well, it's all good.
