Hitler's Idols - 01 : otto skorzeny

A profile of OTTO SKORZENY (12 June 1908 -- 5 July 1975), who was an SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) in the German Waffen-SS during World War II. After fighting on the Eastern Front, he commanded a rescue mission that freed the deposed Italian dictator Benito Mussolini from captivity. Skorzeny was also the leader of Operation Greif, in which German soldiers were to infiltrate through enemy lines, using their opponents' uniforms and customs. At the end of the war, Skorzeny was involved with the Werwolf guerrilla movement and the ODESSA network where Skorzeny would serve as Spanish coordinator.

@triumph951000 I assumed beforehand that Skorzeny was a professional, highly-trained soldier, but judging by this documentary he seems more of a celebrity chasing, career-minded, political soldier and his reputation seems self-fostered to a great extent.

I also personally think that the British Commandos, SBS and SAS were really the forerunners of all of 'Special Forces' units that emerged afterwards.

@Badger071 O.k, i've just had a read about The Brandenburgers on Wikipedia. Very interesting. I knew that the Germans had a few special units early in the war, but i didn't know (or had forgotten) the name. Thanks for the tip. Just goes to show that no matter how much you think you may know ! there's always something else to learn from the knowledge out there in somebody else's head :-)

@Badger071 Germans are not allowed to have done anything better or before the allies. Granting germany anything is a big Nono. Snipers came from russia, special forces were invented by GB.

Oh, I forgot... of course there are one or two things from germany - woman&child-murdering soldiers and the monsters of the Waffen SS.

And when the german army achieved something it was luck or their enemies made a mistake.

@railboy77 No, the book was written by men who knew him and interviewed him. Was he backed up by a tank? i dont think he was why would they waste a tank on a special opp? u do know he was fighting on the Eastern front dont u? he was a brave man. And dont lecture me on battles on the Eastern front for my grandfather was there i have his medals and his diary. Put it this way could u have passed waffen ss+Fallschirmjäger training? no i dont think u couldve.
