YNN reports on a remarkable discovery made by a Rochester Institute of Technology doctoral candidate while tending to his hobby of chicken farming.

Chris Schauerman found an ailing bird inside his Honeoye Falls chicken coop when he went out for daily chores last week. Schauerman said, "I came up to the chicken and I nudged her. She was barely able to pick her head up before it fell back down to the ground."

The chicken, known as Roberta, died later that night, but not before leaving behind a giant egg. "I just couldn't believe it, Schauerman said. You open up the chicken coop and sitting inside the nest with five other eggs is just this behemoth."

Little Roberta, as it's now known, came in at two-and-a-half times the size of a normal egg. Schauerman said, We kind of related it to a woman having a 25-pound baby, if you do the math. I'm pretty sure that's what eventually led to the death of the chicken."

Schauerman called the discovery a bittersweet moment. "I was pretty excited when I saw it but also kind of sad because I knew the chicken put forth its last effort to give this egg."

Guinness once listed a 142 gram egg as the world record holder. A farmer in China recently claimed a 201 gram egg. The Honeoye Falls egg weighs in at 138 grams, over a quarter pound. "So just a few grams short of that previous world record, Schauerman said. I don't know if it's a New York State record, but it's a record in my books."

If you wonder what's next for the monster egg, like many others before, it's destined for the frying pan. "I'm going to make an omelet," Schauerman said. "Maybe a little ham. Delicious!"

But first, Schauermans friend, a teacher at Midlakes school, plans to take it to class for show and tell.

  • monster egg = monster chick = monster chicken

  • Chris...I had a 148 ounce egg layed by our Golden Comets recently. I tried to incubate it, but today, after it is 2 weeks overdue, I decided to crack it open and see if our "Baby Huey" ever developed. To our big suprise, I found another egg inside this egg!! Isn't that wild! No..I"m not kidding and no I"m not on drugs. Its a freak of nature. It happens...just rarely.

  • First of all, this would be a double yolker or even a triple yolker, would you rather see 2 or 3 chicks die or an omlete?
