I don't think its supposed to refer to the literal Lotus eaters depicted in The Odyssey, but instead the actual concept of a 'Lotus eater' which I think that the lyrics explore wonderfully.

This doesn't make me think of the Lotus eaters in The Odyssey... or even the most sublime - Tennyson's Lotos Eaters. I'd say that this is an artistic failure but an alright song.

as a big opeth fan, too, you have to listen to The Faceless - Deconsecrate... technical death metal with clear vocals, too, and even a saxophone solo in it :D
