This is Janusz Madej performing a scene from the play "The Seagull" by Anton Chekhov .Performed part of Constantine Treplev at the Department of Acting Amsterdam 2006 www.januszmadej.com www.januszmadej.hyves.nl
Fair enough question. I am a theatre student, and weeks ago we did a workshop. I was assignmed to play this exact scene (within our classroom, not publicly) Chekov was a challenge for me, and it took me a while to "get it" but it went very well :) It wasn't the story I didn't like either.
i had recently seen this show off broadway with allen cumming and diane west, and though these actors are good they are nothing compared to the emotion, sadness, and true obsession that the other actors showed. they seem to "over act". its not believable - at all.
It's good for a scene workshop. This scene is very difficult. Companies that have performed the play successfully have rehearsed for over a year. I don't know if the cuts to the script hinder them but this is what I am missing. Nina is torn between her memories and the need to continue to live. The cuts changed her character and the character's needs. When you do that, Treplev is also changed. He seems very mature and when I read the play, I don't see him as a mature man but trapped as a boy.
They are both forcing it. I'm playing Nina soon, and she needs to get some voice training. Her accent is too modern for Chekhov. She's still better than him though.
