The animation shows a MIKE 21 computer model simulation of the recent Japanese tsunami covering the entire Pacific Ocean. The model simulation begins by displacing the water surface near the quake epicenter based on estimates of the fault rupture displacement. The model simulation then computes the transformation of the initial displacement into tsunami waves propagating outward. The propagation of the waves continuously transform across the Pacific Ocean, making landfall along the shorelines of the entire Pacific Rim. The disturbances from the tsunami interacting with the shoreline creates a complex pattern of waves that can continue to oscillate for many hours, even days, after the main wave has passed. Notice: The model is not validated and is meant to be for demonstration purpose only.
