Matthew is a singer/songwriter from Hamilton, Ontario and he has given Hero To Hero permission to create a video using his song titled "Remembrance Day". With the help of editing whiz and fellow firefighter Roel Bus from Sarnia Fire Rescue Services , we have composed and edited this tribute to our soldiers past and present.
Matthew's family was liberated from the Nazi occupation of their homeland of the Netherlands by Canadian troops during World War Two and he has a great appreciation for the sacrifices of Canadian and all Allied soldiers. Matthew has paid his respects at Cenotaph's from Halifax to Vimy Ridge and has written this heartfelt song to show his appreciation for the sacrifices of our soldiers, sailors and airmen/women.
I met Matthew in Sarnia during our annual Artwalk festival.
It happened to be June 6th. 2010, the 66th. anniversary of D Day when I attended Matthews Artwalk performance.
Matthew spoke to the crowd about the significance of D Day as he introduced and performed his song "Remembrance Day".
I was moved by this song, so after his performance I asked him if he had a video of the song that we could share with military personnel, their families and friends through the Hero To Hero website.
He did not, so the next time he visited Sarnia to perform he stopped at the firehall where I was working, where we hung a Canadian flag on the side of a firetruck, set a stool in front of it, and Matthew performed a solo acoustic version of the song which we recorded. Needless to say the acoustics weren't the best on the apparatus floor, so we have now made this new video using the original recording of the song with a full band behind it. The video contains some historic photos as well as photos taken by Hero To Hero. We pay tribute to the families of our local fallen heroes and Veterans. We also honour our friend Jack Babcock ,who we had the priviledge of meeting and getting to know before he sadly passed a short time before his 110th. birthday..
Jack was Canada's last Veteran of World War One.
