House-training is often the first thing most dogs need to learn as they become part of a new family. Since this is something I have been getting numerous requests for - I decided to do a video on it.

There is some additional information on housetraining (tips) that I did not include in the video which is available on my Facebook page under the discussions section.

***NOTE***
All this information assumes that the dog in question is in good health and not suffering from any sickness/disease. Sometimes lack of bladder and bowel control is a result of ill health and if you suspect that this might be the case with your dog, please immediately consult your vet to rule out any such possibility.

It is also assumed that the dog is not struggling with fear-based elimination. As is often the case with some dogs, the goal in these instances would be to tackle the issue of fear/anxiety in addition to following all the advice given in the video. Unfortunately, the details in these situations are specific and unique to the dog - so the best approach is to contact a professional dog trainer who uses positive reinforcement only, to assess and determine the most appropriate course of action.

  • Great video. That's exactly what I did with my puppy. I know for sure now that my puppy (a 3 months old GSD) knows exactly what he's supposed to do: not doing it inside the house. I have 1 problem: Young puppies his age use their mouth a lot (which I'm working on), so he nips my anckle to communicate that he needs to go instead of just coming to me like in your video. Would that resolve itself as he grows up? How do I deal with nipping without frightening him of telling me that he needs to go?

  • @gavroash I would consistently ask him to sit or give you his paw before you get up to take him out. Eventually he will realize this is what to do to let you know.

  • Great job with the videos, I've watched many of them and I don't even have a dog but am planning on getting one. The question I have is whether your advice will work with all breeds of dogs. I'm thinking of a Shiba Inu but have heard that they are not easy to train and could be very stubborn. Is it a matter of breed or as long as you put in the time, you will get the results you want? Are there some dogs who just won't be obedient no matter how much training and care you've put into it?

  • @ctarroza You are correct, it is just a matter of putting in some time and being creative. It could be that there are such dogs that are stubborn, but I've never met one yet.

  • Hi there! I hav a question... will it b too late for me to start training a 3-year-old bad bhaving boy(i mean my dog)? i never trained him properly n i regreted for not getting any solution online tat time... his barking problem caused a big trouble to my family n me tat annoyed me n i left all the taking care part of his for my mom... so feel so bad for this though ==

  • Uh i remember when we was looking after two Shitsu puppies and they just shit and pissed all over the house. One even took a shit on my bed!

  • @sequoyahbean Too much freedom was definitely a mistake of mine. I've been keeping him leashed for the passed week. Here's to a clean puppy.

  • @pdvelez Have the leash in your hand. The object is to constantly supervise the dog when it's out of its crate so that you can see when it has to go, and redirect them to the outdoors.

  • @DblOSmith Usually, when something goes wrong, it's usually due to inadequate supervision. Dogs that are not yet clean in the house should have no freedom in the house without being on a leash! If you cannot watch the dog, then put the dog in a crate. Go back to a shorter schedule. Sometimes I take the dog out every fifteen minutes, and if they don't go, they are placed back in the crate for ten minutes, then taken out again. Rinse, repeat until puppy goes, then give food treat with praise.

  • A few weeks!? I've had my dog for about 7 months and I'm still pulling my hair out with t his dog. It's sooo frustrating!!!

  • Truly learning alot from you. Thank you

  • I need you help! I just got a new dog it is a 3month old husky. Wen I start to train him he can sit but only when he wants to and he is easily distracted I do not know what his "reward" is. Meaning Sometimes he works for food and sometime it is toys. but most of the time after I tell him to sit about 8times he runs away and lays in the kitchen. Its really hard to trian him when we go for walk to.... is he to young for walk should I only train in the back yard... and he eats grass... HELP!!

  • She goes outside when I take her and say: "Go pee!", so she knows that it's ok to pee outside. We tried to take the pee pad away but she would go anyway, since she is not used to hold it. She also doesn't know how to come and let me know that she wants to go outside. I hope it's not too confusing! Thank you!

  • Great tutorials, Tab!

We have 2,5 years old Maltese. We taught her to go on the pee pad but now need to reteach her to go outside. Two reasons for that: a) she misses the pad, b) we want to get a bigger dog and I believe there is no way to have two different rules for each of them, especially for house training. I hope it makes sense. My question is, how do I REteach my Maltese to go outside? Should I start putting her on a leash?.. Should we keep the pad?.. Thank you for your time!!!
