An anatomically incorrect rock musical. Hedwig (John Cameron Mitchell), born a boy named Hansel in East Berlin, fell in love with an American G.I. (Maurice Dean Wint) and underwent a sex-change operation in order to marry him and flee to the West. Unfortunately, nothing worked out quite as it was supposed to - years later, Hedwig is leading her rock band on a tour of the U.S., telling her life story through a series of concerts at Bilgewater Inn seafood restaurants. Her tour dates coincide with those of arena-rock star Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt), a wide-eyed boy who once loved Hedwig... but then left with all her songs. Written and directed by John Cameron Mitchell.

  • I....love that song. It just touches a place deep in my heart. And the pictures. Amazing.

  • Every time I watch this I'm only half-crying until the "Deny me and be doomed" part.

    Then the waterworks start flowing.

  • @gabbalina26 I must've seen this film a half dozen times and I'm still not sure. I don't think so, simply because we don't see anything. I think the Mother is crazy! She does do a number of things that a quite odd.

  • 09:35 ---> translation:

    H: Jesus says the weirdest things…

    M: Don’t you ever mention that name again!

    H: But he died for our sins…

    M: So did Hitler. Absolute power corrupts (lit.: spoils the character).

    H: Absolutely.

    M: It’s better to be powerless, son!

  • this song makes me cry every time i hear it

  • I remember loving Hedwig's lipstick while singing the Origin of Love.

  • This movie is so... indescribable.
