One of the fundemental issues that Hamas believes will be sidelined at the Annapolis conference is the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland.

As the conference begins Al Jazeera's David Chater looks at the forgotten refugees of Al-Jalazon Camp near Ramallah.

Palestinians wanted freedom from the Ottomans and desired their own nation just as the Jews. The British were trying to accommodate both not just a nation for the Jews. There was never a deal made because each time a deal was proposed to the Palestinians they declined it just like they do today. They most certainly had a choice in the matters then and now concerning their outcome. The fact that they make no choice is an attribute of their own ignorance and instead choose to live in misery.

It's definitely a sad situation but poverty can be a choice. These commentators never mention the fact that many of these refugees left on their own free will. The Jews had been preparing for opposition since 1914. They were smart in that they taxed themselves, fortified their dwellings, and utilized any political resource available. What did the Palestinians do? They waited on the salvation of other Arab countries. That's why they are refugees now. They should learn from their mistakes.

On April 9, 1953, the Jordanian daily al-Urdun, quoted refugee Yunes Ahmed Assad as saying: "For the flight and fall of the other villages, it is our leaders who are responsible, because of the dissemination of rumors exaggerating Jewish crimes and describing them as atrocities in order to inflame the Arabs... they instilled fear and terror into the hearts of the Arabs of Palestine until they fled, leaving their homes and property to the enemy."

In March 1976. Mahmoud Abbas, the current president of the Palestinian Authority, wrote: "The Arab armies entered Palestine to protect the Palestinians from the Zionist tyranny but, instead, they abandoned them, forced them to emigrate and to leave their homeland, and threw them into prisons similar to the ghettos in which the Jews used to live."

The Palestinian refugee problem was created by the Arabs.

Before the war, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Said declared: "We will smash the country with our guns and obliterate every place the Jews seek shelter in.
