While most of the city was celebrating International Labor Day, Nanjings Jiming Temple (鸡鸣寺) inaugurated a weeklong festival to commemorate of the birth of Siddhartha Gautama (佛诞) otherwise known as the Śākyamuni Buddha. This is the first time the temple has organized a large celebration for the Buddhas birthday, which falls on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month. Dozens of women monks led several hundred civilians in two hours of prayer and a beautiful candlelit procession representing the Buddhas ascension to Enlightenment.
Recorded on May 1, 2009.
