Dr. John Holden ventures to London to attend a paranormal psychology symposium with the intention to expose devil cult leader, Julian Karswell. Holden is a skeptic and does not believe in Karswell's power. Nonetheless, he accepts an invitation to stay at Karswell's estate, along with Joanna Harrington, niece of Holden's confidant who was electrocuted in a bizarre automobile accident. Karswell secretly slips a parchment into Holden's papers that might possibly be a death curse. Recurring strange events finally strike fear into Holden, who believes that his only hope is to pass the parchment back to Karswell to break the demonic curse.

  • Without a doubt this, for me, is the best British horror film ever made. Dana Andrews is brilliant as Dr Holden, the skeptical psychologist, but is outshone by Niall MacGinniss' perfect portrayal of occultist Julian Karswell, charming evil personified. A film way ahead of its time. Director Jacques Tourneur and star Dana Andrews both objected to having the actual Demon appear believing the psychological implication of the supernatural to have a better effect on the audience.

wow I even know who you are now, simply for studying your manner of attack... you are mono, a premier among the sadist trolls at okcupid.com, a site which, the public should be warned here, is fraught with many such mechanical internet lounge lizards as this one, which clearly followed me here for dora's sake and picked a mindless argument on a subject which he clearly knows very little about. hello, mono. say hi to dora for me. I have another video for her soon.

  • @railman01 a great film now as it was then,good call railman,cheers,!!

  • Unfortunately, I don't have Turner Classic Movies anymore. It is nice to see this film, again ^^

  • the best thing about this film is that you see the monster at the begining, very different for the time.

  • I used to watch horror films on BBC 2 on a Saturday night with my mother when I was a kid. This one has always stood out as my favourite. Absolute classic with a creepy atmosphere. The ending on the train is just brilliant.

  • @NonDramaZone Steven Spielberg (Jaws), Ridley Scott (Alien) or John Carpenter (Halloween) would make a good job of a remake. Look at 'Jaws' you hardly ever saw the shark and Spielberg ended up with one of the greatest films ever made. The two scariest parts (Ben Gardner's head and Robert Shaw's (Quint's) indianapolis monologue) didn't even involve the shark, just it's implication, which built the tension for the terrific climax.

  • XD at 6.00

  • @railman01 That's my question, and I'm afraid I already know the answer. CGI is too often used as a replacement for plot and talent.

  • @demon91 Imagine what a CGI remake would be like.

  • @demon91 I reckon a remake with CGI effects would do the demon justice. But could they find two leads to match Dana Andrews and Niall McGinnis and recreate the atmosphere of this classic.
