  • another record i REALLY want now! your homemade machine has WAY better sound quality than any gramophone ever made before, emg just does not produce the bass of this horn INCREDIBLE

  • @kirtley2010 I think it is not only just the horn, but also a lot the orthophonic soundbox (Fully rebuilt). I never heard a EMG soundbox "live", but to me the Ortho is the best sounding reproducer ever made.

Badly they aren´t cheap... (Ok, a EMG soundbox is a whole lot more expensive).

I know of the soundbox experimentes by EMGcolonel, with him the Meltope wins - I have to look for a Meltrope some time... :)

  • @formiggini yes he reccomends the meltrope but they arent cheap either, over £50 for a decent one, i am about to get 2 very good machines, one a hmv model 31 and the other being a machine i am making from the best parts i can get including a garrad motor, emg mk 9 horn and a hmv 511 tonearm so i am trying to get a meltrope for both of them however the seller thinks the hmv no4 soundbox currently on the 31 compares very well to his emg soundbox, you should try one of them, they are quite common!

  • @kirtley2010 I once had a Electrola No4, which is by all means the same soundbox as the HMV No4. But even with new gaskets, it never sounds nearly as good as a Ortho or a Columbia No9 - so I sold it.

As I said, I never heard a Meltrope live, but a soundbox I really like is the late Songster Soundbox with aluminium diaphragm (also of course with new gaskets).

One thing I learned - the HMV 5a&5b have lesser bass than the Victor Orthophonic...

  • @formiggini well i have 2 aluminium diaphragm songsters, i might sell one if you are interested

  • @kirtley2010 I also have a Songster - but thank you :)
