@cv4159 Josh White like Lonnie was most influenced by the GREAT Leadbelly. Search Leadbelly and see how many songs of his from the 30'S made it to the pop charts by so many artists.

Lonnie Donegan learned "House of the Rising Sun" from Josh White's 1942 hit, which became a classic in the UK. Lonnie wrote that it was the first record he ever bought, and that he believes Josh's recording started the rock revolution in Great Britain. Lonnie performs the song similarly to Josh' original version. The Animals also learned the song from Josh White's recording.

First released on the "Lonnie Rides Again" album in 1958, this number has a totally different chord sequence to the, much later, and more popular, Animals/Dylan version.
This version probably expresses the real "mood" that the songwriter intended.
I especially like the guitar work by the late Les Bennetts. Great, simple but effective solo !
Donegan's album tracks were invariably better than his more commercial top twenty chart stuff, but sadly they appealed to a much smaller audience.
It is sometimes claimed that the Animals did a rock version of this song after they heard Bob Dylan's acoustic version but here's a band version of this song recorded years before either Bob Dyaln or the Animals recorded it.
