Should we have Maori Seats in Parliament? Broadcaster and former MP Willie Jackson has been fairly forthright in his comments about why we need to keep them and he spoke with Allan Lee.
To suggest being "Maori" now has nothing to with race is intellectual dishonesty, Maori academics tell us it's more to do with culture, but their culture is quite obviously Western European, so who are this mysterious group?
mmmm i agree, the idea of having a party based on any ideas based around one race is definitely self conflicting. As having a Maori in me i have never agreed with any of these "handout" and "whats we deserve and whats ours" Political crap. Nor do i identify as a as a Maori. i Was born in NZ and i will work just as hard as the next person because i am a kiwi. Born Equally and equal entitlement.
If you have an understanding of NZ history Maori have been under represented in national and local goverance. This not because of some defunct racial arguement that Maori have separate representation. And for electoral purposes being Maori has had nothing to do with "race" or blood quantum. Being Maori since 1975 is self-identifiable . Seeing this as a race issue blinds you to issues of justice and history as well as ethnicity if you can understand the difference
To afford a particular group special privilige or entitlement on the basis of race is the very definition of racism. Maori should have representation, but it should be legitimate.
To his credit, he instead spends most of the time having a lippy fight with Tamihere for 3 hours each day. They constantly rant about each other's performance with the 'buttons' as being poor... its crackup but its not always very intelligent to listen to.
willie jackson is the worst type of racist, maori seats should be won by election, not given as a right to champion one section of the nz public ie. "our people." that is racist right there,if the present government mentioned our people,as in "whites" you would hear the outcry of racism by maori loud and clear, and rightly so,n.z. is for all who live here, together, not as seperate groups, being given a position without earning it is an insult to not only you but to all those around you,EARN RESPECT.
So could we have a European-Ancestry Party or an Asian Party representing firstly those 'people'.
The government should represent individuals not groups of people. Group representation leads to mob rule. The Maori people should be angered that politians are using them a pawns. For example, if a Maori MP makes a bad policy, does it mean that policy is supported by ALL Maori? NO! The creation of the Maori Party will do Maori more harm than good. It could distance you from the majority.
