Today, I am teaching you how to worship at a Japanese shinto shrine. Even native Japanese might not know these rules well. So I hope this video is useful for many people including Japanese.

(There are, depending on the shrine, some other ways of worshipping. Today I am introducing the most common way).

-------------

Bow before going through the gate.
Wash your hands and rinse mouth at the Chozuya.
Take a dipper with your right hand. And scoop the water then wash your left hand.
Next, wash your right hand.
And then, put a little water in your cupped hand to rinse your mouth. (Mind you, never touch the dipper directly with your lips).
Finally, hold the dipper almost vertically so that water can trickle down the handle.
You also have to go through these processes with only one ladle of water.
You cannot walk on the center of the approach because it is considered the Kami's special pathway.
4)拝殿に来たら(at the oratory)
Bow once.
If it has a shrine bell with a rope, rattle it.
Usually we put small coins into the box called Saisembako.
Make two deep bows.
Clap your hands twice.
Make a prayer.
After the prayer, bow once again deeply.
Go back, avoiding walking the center of the approach as well as you came.
After going through the gate, turn around and bow.

  • wow that's nice to know, hopefully someday i can try all of it..

i have a question.. why it is need to wash your hands and rinse your mouth?? what is the purpose of it??..

  • @ey2es Thanks for your very nice message and comments. To wash our hands and rinse our mouth out are because to be polite to the God. ^-^

  • you forgot to wash your left hand once again after you rinsed your mouth.

  • @dragonfly5885 I know what you want to say. Your way is also correct and more polite. But there are some ways. Before I made this video, I checked MANY web sites and asked people who worked shrines, then decided this way to let people get it easily. ^-^

  • @JustMiyabi i respect what you're doing. i believe good manners come from a good heart and what you're doing is teachings of the heart. i'm glad if more people find interest in your video.

  • @dragonfly5885 Thank you very much for your nice comments! (^0^)

    Have a good weekend!

  • love her outfit >_<

when i visit a shrine in Japan someday, i'll try this out and i hope it'll be soon XD

  • Well now I learn how to get in a shrine I am not a shintoist but I know how to enter and wash my hands before I get in and I bet they need to bow down before you enter any religous place, in a way I bow down at church but it is nice to enter into a shinto place in Japan due to respect Japan's treaditional religion.

  • Just dropping in to visit, I like that.

  • Thank you very much for this video! It has answered a lot of my questions!
