I read that tricopters are more stable than quad copters. A single rotor machine spinning at 4x rpm would be a lot lighter...

With 3 rotors you'd have a moment on the craft which would cause you to rotate, the 4 rotor have 2 spinning clockwise and 2 counterclockwise to cancel each other out (in theory)

i don't see why they don't just put 4 ropes coming from the walls to the blade supports to hold it in the center of the room.. but would still allow it to go up and down

I imagine they didn't think they needed it, the quadrotor is supposed to be very stable.

@knokcs: How can you call this wasted time? What world records have you broken lately? (I could make some guesses, but I'll refrain...)

Bigger gears on the roaters and some hand gears linked. To the foot gears to assist with power

spring and shock located on the floor not attached to the chair. Don't want to add weight.

This is Great!!, In Hindsight his chair should be strapped to a slide shaft anchored into the volleyball post hole. only way to go is up. Put a spring and shock on the bottom to absorb hard landing. If he was not moving horizontally he wouldn't have to stop so abruptly to keep from hitting the walls.

This was an attempt at he Sikorsky prize, where they have to fly for 60+ seconds, reach an altitude of 3m, and remain within a 10 metre square area. Holding it with ropes I think would disqualify them. You could be right though, that from the centre of that room there wasn't room to move 10m in any direction. But there is a movement limit built into the rules.

i believe that not to be true. cause he said that the flight time was limited by the size of the room they used for the test... therefor if the rules were that it couldn't go out of a defined area. the room size could NOT have had anything to do with the flight time

I believe that part of the rules for the record is that is has to be able to stay within a predefined area on its own.
