You yanks and your conspiracy theories. Greek politicians `cooked` the books in order to be eligible for entry to the EU. Whilst in the euro zone they borrowed money they otherwise could not have acquired. At interest rates set to that of the richest nation in the EU, Germany. When it became apparent to the market what was going on, greek bonds shot up and was unable to borrow anymore. The EU will not allow Greece to default on its debt, because 60% of it is owned by French banks. Voilà, riots!
