Zuba live at Boulder, Colorado's Fox Theatre around 1998.
This was my first multi-camera shoot and edit. It was recorded on a Hi8 camera and several S-VHS decks connected to separate cameras. I used a bunch of Videonics Thumbs Up home editing units to insert SMPTE VITC timecode into the signals going to the S-VHS decks. The Hi8 had Sony's RC timecode. One S-VHS deck got an audio feed from the board.
In post I used the machine with the board audio as the master. Its signal passed through several Thumbs Up units, each of which was programmed to start playback of the other decks. To sync the slaves I would adjust their start points. Everything was mixed in real time through a Videonics MX-1 video mixer. It took hours of setup and detailed notes to get all this to work. If I didn't cue it all and start the mix fast enough the decks would start cancelling play-pause mode (a head and tape protection feature). That's probably why the mix itself is a little sloppy.
I was lucky enough to see them and purchase their first album in Rock Island, Ill back around '95. Since then I have nabbed all the zuba cds and a couple shirts When I got my first computer in 2000 I looked up zuba and was able to get two cds by LIza. I look forward to seeing her perform again someday.
