In 1620, the Pilgrims established the Mayflower Compact before they landed at Plymouth Rock. The document said,n the presence of God, Amen. How could a case be any clearer? That's an establishment of religion for sure. The Constitution wouldn't really "say" very much if rather than it's language we looked only to it's "history."

@baigandine If having a National Day of Prayer is an establishment of religion, then that means Christianity has been the official religion of the U.S. since the Constitution's inception. Starting in 1789, the U.S. started releasing prayer proclamations with very evangelical Christian language in it like mentioning Bible verses, hymns, God, the Holy Spirit, and even Jesus. According to the framers of the Constitution, releasing a prayer proclamation wasnt an establishment of religion.

@bRizzle2009100 You also shouldn't assume everything the founders after they wrote the Cosntitution did was immaculately Constitutional just because they wrote the thing. They didn't retain a right to somehow alter the Constitution with their behavior. The document ruled, not the men. And no one person wrote it. It was a result of political compromise. So yes clauses absolutely got into the Constitution that not all the founders believed in.

@baigandine It's not just that. Even when the framers were debating the First Amendment in Congress, not one of the framers used to phrase "separation of church & state" or even hinted that public religious expression was prohibited. The founders wouldnt go thru all that trouble to establish a republican form of government just to do the same thing the British did to them to the rest of the country. And when u study ppl like Washington, u know he wouldnt do something like that.
