This is a Medieval carol dating back to perhaps the 13th century. We tend to think of carols and Christmas hymns as being relatively modern, but this proves that they had their roots in the distant past. I had not come across this particular carol until requested for it yesterday. Having listened to it as an instrumental and as a choral piece, I recognize in it the roots of at least two songs of more modern times, namely Mary Hamilton and Galway Bay (The old version). The title means 'This other night' and is also the title of an album by a lady called Heather Dale. The language is medieval too, which accounts for the peculiar spelling and some unusual words not in modern parlance, e.g. veray which I think must have been verais meaning in truth.

I wish all my followers a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

  • Lovely, Tony.

Appreciate that you thoughtfully included the lyrics subtitled, as I'm hard of hearing and wouldn't have been able to get them all otherwise.

  • Thank you, I am pleased to have been able to help

  • How utterly beautiful. So simple, so authentic, so undecorated with modern (and false) style.

I wrote down the tune as I listened, so thank you for the notes on similar tunes.

And also, thank you for overlaying the text. You made my day.

  • Thanks Raymond, Merry Christmas to you and yours

  • Beautiful Tony, I have never heard this before. Veray veray good. B4N

  • I accept your kind comment graciously, but I am Tony, not Phil. :-))
