"Glenn Miller and his Orchestra" essentially existed from 1937 until the end of September 1942. In OCT42 he was commissioned a Captain in the US Army and, subsequently was detatched to the US Army-Air Forces shortly thereafter.

By April of 1943 Captain Glenn Miller had organised his famous AAF "Band," specifically the Army-Air Forces Training Command (AAFTC) Orchestra that was billeted at Yale University and performed on the weekly I Sustain The Wings broadcasts until 10JUN44. The vocal group for the AAFTC Orchestra was named The Crew Chiefs due to the relationship of the Training Command within the entire Army-Air Forces. A "Crew Chief" was the Lead mechanic on the crews that serviced the planes and weaponry of the AAF in the European Theatre of Operations (ETO) and Pacific Theatre of Operations (PTO).

In Summary, the singing Crew Chiefs were a performing element of Glenn Miller's wartime Orchestra from 1943 through his death in 1944 and through the end of the Orchestra's "life" in NOV45. In JAN46 there was a reconstructed Glenn Miller Civilian Orchestra conducted by Tex Beneke with a vocal group also called The Crew Chiefs.

  • Also, in the interest of accuracy, this is performed by The Army-Air Forces Training Command Orchestra under the Direction of Captain Glenn Miller...

  • @wrfreytag Are you positive, because if so, I'd be more than happy to correct my video. :)

  • Benny Goodman had some nice vocalists but you gotta admit, Glen Miller's vocals were 'cavu' *
