As Glasgow prepares to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014 much of the citys poorest areas are being regenerated after 30 years of industrial decline, poor housing and poverty. The Regeneration of the Oatlands district is Scotlands second largest single community regeneration scheme. Work on the 32.2 hectare site started in 2005 and the eventual development value is estimated at £212,000,000.

Most people were rehoused into new properties in 1998 2000 and the old flats were then boarded up, fenced off and lay derelict, until they started demolishing them last year. During lulls in the demolition at weekends I jumped the security fence and spent several mornings wandering around the streets and homes, searching for clues and evidence of the life that once thrived there

  • A really touching clip! Reminds me of my family from another Glasgow Re-housing scheme. The exact same story of a community torn apart. Will Glasgow ever learn!

  • Excellent video, was made extra special by finding the irish chap. You cant help thinking the heart is being ripped out of Glasgow in preperation for the commonwealth games. Places like oatlands dalmarnock and possibly bridgeton. As the irish chap said the new houses are far better than the tenements but there is no heart or soul in them. I guess nostalgia has a part to play and hopefully new generations will come in and hopefully build a new community.
