In AD 922, Arab courtier Ahmad Ibn Fadlan accompanies a party of Vikings to the barbaric North. Ibn Fadlan is appalled by the Vikings customs-- their wanton sexuality, their disregard for cleanliness, their cold-blooded human sacrifices. @JesusConvictScorpion - I haven't read the Michael Crichton novel (Eaters of the Dead) that the film was based on, but from what I can gather the book does suggest that Wendol are descended from a tribe of surviving Neanderthals. Neanderthals were physically far stronger and more robust than homo sapiens, so this might also explain how they are able to carry off their own dead with little difficulty following a battle.
