This is a good song, because it is a self experience he had with god, because he had neither bible or song butthe holy spirit tought him through a deck of cards that he had. God Moves in a mistirious ways. And this is one out of many.

Great version by Wink Martindale. Wikipedia More info re: T. Texas Tyler: ".. He wrote and performed a spoken word record The Deck of Cards in 1948 .." - per posting of oldcountrytunes. Again, this is a great version. Thanks for posting, caerleonborn!

This was done by Phil Harris, and it is the version that was on the hit parade in Aussie.
From memory he ends with " I know because I knew the solider'
Wink Martindale was too young to have been the soldier

Agree with above - I also remember it from my youth, I tried a few years back to get this but I kept getting the Max Bygraves version or another who did it. However this is the BEST version, thanks for putting this up

What a lovely song and what knowledge of the Bible. I remember listening to this song when I was a child and loved it then as I do now and it still make me tingle and brings a tear to my eyes. I believe it is a true story too. Great!!!
