Like most social animals, lions have a heirarchy. The lioness he chased away was probably of a much lower rank. The females who continue eating are probably higher ranking.
Before anyone gets too judgemental, please remember we humans do this all the time: expensive restaurants, exclusive clubs, gated communities...

When male lions get maturity they are kicked out of pride. They live alone and stay nomads for years before having the opportunity to win a pride. All that time, where do they go for eating? AT RESTAURANT??
A lion is able to hunt better than a lioness: he can survive alone, a lioness alone would die in 2 weeks. When a male lead a pride, he don't hunt because he fucks every 15'. Fair enough!
