In March 2007 we visited the Niigata region of Japan to select koi and tategoi. This clip depicts the selection process of a Hoskikin tataegoi which is growing in their mud ponds through the summer of 2007. Watch out for the video of the harvest late Oct 2007.

  • the deformed fry are obviously culled and put away. while the remaining koi end up in other petshops which would sell it as ornamental koi at a cheaper price.

  • they're sold as lowgrade koi or as live bait

  • yea i also wonder but i would think they will be crushed and smased among all the fish ....

  • So, I wonder what percentage of the fry are destroyed in the culling process. Each batch of eggs must produce a lot of fry that have no commercial value. Are they ground into fish food and fed to other koi ? Are they sold ? Anybody who knows and would be willing to share; I would really appreciate it.

  • errrmm..... lol! what?

  • perfect!

  • nice
