In March 2007 we visited the Niigata region of Japan to select koi and tategoi. This clip depicts the selection process of a Hoskikin tataegoi which is growing in their mud ponds through the summer of 2007. Watch out for the video of the harvest late Oct 2007.
the deformed fry are obviously culled and put away. while the remaining koi end up in other petshops which would sell it as ornamental koi at a cheaper price.

So, I wonder what percentage of the fry are destroyed in the culling process. Each batch of eggs must produce a lot of fry that have no commercial value. Are they ground into fish food and fed to other koi ? Are they sold ? Anybody who knows and would be willing to share; I would really appreciate it.
