"Listen to the Falling Rain"

by Robert Campbell

A little more than three years ago
you came into the room
I couldn't eat I couldn't sleep
you left me little to assume
you came in from another world
I couldn't find any peace
but it's a cosmic ride when worlds collide
in between the sheets.

Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
brush gently against your ear
it's a one-hand clapper, the spinal tapper
that erases away all fear.

What's that ya say?
What's that ya doin'?
What's that that's gonna save us
both from ruin?

Your love's as hot as a sunset
your torch inflames the Silver Chalice
flames leaping high up in the night
Aurora Borealis
just to spend a day with you
is like a lifetime of leisure
flowing through the veins
of a Dutchman's long lost pleasure
arching up into the sky
a bow to break the chain
shattered it sprinkles down
with the falling rain.

Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
brush gently against your ear
it's the thunderclap, it's the spinal tap
that chases away all fear.

What's that ya say?
What's that ya doin'?
What's that that's gonna save us
both from ruin?

What's that you're doing, babe?
Why do you act like that?
Your mood swing has calmed my ring
from blue to pitch black.

Woke up this morning
found a note left on the bed
hit me like a ton of bricks
could hardly float my head
said you once studied Anthropology
had an interest in mankind
and you died three years ago in Scientology
getting high
your last line nearly made me laugh
when I started to flip the page
but I was amazed when the letters faded
dissipated
vanished into space.

Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain past the door
footsteps on the sky
trailing sparks as she goes
listen to the rhyme of the falling rain
the sound of a round of machine gun fire
bursting against my brain.

Well you win some you lose some
what's there left to say
just to close on a happy note
it's really been great to masturbate
for a thousand days.

Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
brush gently against your ear
it's a one-hand clapper, the spinal tapper
that washes away all fear.
