Quick Changeover, Make Ready, SMED, no matter what you call it, we believe it may be the most misunderstood and under utilized technique in the Lean tool-kit. Why, because most organizations only employ the changeover methodology to production equipment changeovers. In fact, the methodology can be applied anywhere people and processes interact!
Check out this video. It was provided to us courtesy of the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center and shows a changeover of one of their ballrooms.
Changeover Statistics:
Delta Ballroom, 55,314 square feet, changed over from a theater style set (chairs only) for 4000 people to a banquet style set (round tables) for 4000. The entire changeover took only 39 minutes. (The video has been made into a 2 minute clip.)
Have you got a changeover video at your facility (in production or non-production), send it to us and we will post it. Who knows, your video may inspire another organization!
There was a time when someone was considering doing table set-ups at a workstation and then transporting the set tables to location! I envisioned some very custom carts for the transport part, but even so it may have saved transport overall because of the transport of all the little pieces would not be done.
