There are two bodies of water that comprise part of Kryptos, the CIA Sculpture by James Sanborn. This one is a whirlpool located at the base of the perforated copper ribbon in front of the Vigenere Tableau side. Originally intended to be agitated into standing waves, the final design of this pool was altered a little. The swirling water is controlled by an electric pump submerged in this circular pool that was originally reserved for a tree grate.
The other body of water (pond not shown) is calm and reflective. It is on the opposite side of the courtyard relative to the sculpture (the petrified tree and standing, verdigris copper ribbon) and serves as a place to contemplate the day's events.
