Each of us have days or nights which change us and leave a profound effect...this one was mine. 26th June 2011, at the New Theatre, Oxford was when I first heard Ryan's piano version of New York, New York. Having heard most of the live electric versions and the original album version, I sat in the theatre during his recent Acoustic Nightmare Tour, totally engrossed in this new version. At that moment, I knew what I was witnessing, was perfection in songwriting and true music. The heat inside the theatre was intense, but DRA's presence and music made the night unforgettable. Jesse Malin's support intro was terrific & started the evening off on a great note.
This is a live studio version from 9th September 2011, which I had a go at remastering myself. Hope that's ok?
This song earned Ryan Adams a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal.
The album version, appears on his 2001 studio album "Gold". The original music video features Ryan performing in front of the city's skyline from Brooklyn and was filmed four days before the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre. As a result, a message was placed at the end of the video, dedicating it to those who lost their lives, and to "those who worked to save them". Profits from the video were donated to a September 11 charity.

"Well, I shuffled through the city on the 4th of July
I had a firecracker waiting to blow
Breakin' like a rocket whose makin' its way
To the cities of Mexico
Lived in an apartment out on Avenue A
I had a tar-hut on the corner of town
Had myself a lover who was finer than gold
But I've broken up and busted up since
And love don't play any games with me
Anymore like she did before
The world won't wait, so I better shake
That thing right out there through the door
Hell, I still love you, New York
Found myself a picture that would fit in the folds
Of my wallet and it stayed pretty good
Still amazed I didn't lose it on the roof of the place
When I was drunk and I was thinking of you
Every day the children they were singing their tune
Out on the streets and you could hear from inside
Used to take the subway up to Houston and 3rd
I would wait for you and I'd try to hide
And love won't play any games with me
Anymore if you don't want it to
The world won't wait and I watched you shake
But honey, I don't blame you
Hell, I still love you, New York
Hell, I still love you, New York
New York
I remember Christmas in the blistering cold
In a church on the upper west side
Babe, I stood their singing, I was holding your arm
You were holding my trust like a child
Found a lot of trouble out on Avenue B
But I tried to keep the overhead low
Farewell to the city and the love of my life
At least we left before we had to go
And love won't play any games with you
Anymore if you want 'em to
So we better shake this old thing out the door
I'll always be thinkin' of you
I'll always love you though New York
I'll always love you though New York, New York, New York"

@SleepWhenIamDead Many thanks Jamie. I wish I could! David Ryan Adams is an exceptionally gifted and highly prolific songwriter. One of the most highly respected artists in music. Hope you can get into his work! I saw him play in Oxford on a blazing hot summer's night in June. Kate went with me to see him. One night which was worth every single minute. Ryan's support artist, Jesse Malin was terrific. A brilliant evening.
