The original starts with "I had to .... come out to show them." Then, you hear "Come out to show them" repeated. This clip is being played on 2 tape players, one slightly faster than the other. So, gradually, you hear it first as reverb, then as an echo, etc. -- eventually, the meaning of the text becomes numbing and you get into it as sounds. ANother piece from the same time is "It's gonna Rain." Reich then tries this with live performers rather than tapes. Here you can hear phasing at 3:00.
