hey what coating do you use on your canvas? am having some issues with the contrast of colors when i paint on white. is it an old coating of oil paint or something else? i am trying to self teach so i tried turpentine with some burnt sienna and some yellow ocher. it didnt turn out well though :(

I don't use canvas...I use wood panel. After covering with 4 to 5 coats of acrylic gesso and letting it dry, I tone the panel with a quick oil wash using yellow ocher and raw umber just to kill the white and give myself a nice medium tone on which to paint. I let the wash dry before proceeding. I paint "alla prima" which means is all in a single painting session usually lasting between 3 to 5 hours in total. Thanks for asking and good luck!
