Emotional hardcore!

People think emo means emotional and that its really an expression used for depressed overally emotional teenagers. But thing is, they didn't grab it from the roots. They didn't know it means emotive hardcore and it was a subgenre of hardcore punk that started in 1985. They didn't know the first emo bands were Rites Of Spring and Embrace. No. Emo isn't mainstream and it is well, basically dead. MCR is NOT emo. They're wayyyy to mainstream.

Not sure why people here are so butt-hurt and bitchtastic, it's music, get over yourselves. I grew up with this music, Rites, Black Flag, Minor Threat, etc., and yeah BACK THEN *we* called this style of music "emo" or "emo-core", but there are only so many labels to go around - the kids use the word "hardcore" completely differently than we did, and last time I looked, "Goth" was basically metal. It is what it is. MCR is a talented band and good at what they do, should they be called "New Emo"?

@DaDramaQu33n. Yes you make a good point but something that is more important in terms of credibility and integrity is that Rites of Spring were on Dischord records and so it was a DIY release as opposed to the 'emo' bands of today which are signed to major labels and have huge marketing campaigns behind them. That to me is more significant in whether something is labelled 'Punk' or not.

See this is what emo was supposed to be. A subgenre of punk, i wish we had more bands like this.
