In this section Johnny sings "As Long as the Grass Shall Grow" which was written by Peter LaFarge, Oliver LaFarge's son (there is a rumor that Peter was adopted by Oliver but it isn't true, for more information on him please visit peterlafarge.com). Oliver won the Pulitzer Prize for his 1929 book "Laughing Boy," a love story set that takes place the Navajo Nation and was the fist Native American novel to receive this honor. Johnny and June returned to this song when Johnny was working with Rick Rubin in "Unearthed Vol. 2 Trouble in Mind" where they rewrote it to tell their own love story.

  • This is Ben Perkins writing. What a great joy it is to watch Pete Seeger, Johnny and June. I have seen Johhny in concert three times inAust... but I have only seen Pete in dreams... which is a great thing, but to have missed out on singing along with Pete live in concert is a life disappointment. This is a great and imporant song. American govts are a sad disgrace lacking compassion...sound familiar!

  • If you ever get your hands on the Johnny Cash Show, you can see Pete Seeger's dazzling and hair-raising appearance on it. Just a gorgeous moment of rebellion and poetry.

  • It always amazes me that some of his best work was when he was in the worst shape. This stuff really penetrates.

  • Johnny is really obnoxious in this interview. It must have been difficult for June to put up with that for so many years. John Carter Cash has said that John continued his addictions into the 80's but there was a time during the seventies when he was clean.

  • As laudable as their intentions are, Johnny really does not need any help with his songs - and certainly not this kind of help.

  • this is an epic vid... Is there a Rainbow Quest DVD set? I love Seegers demeanor and intimate knowledge of all his guests work. There should be more show like this on TV now days. I guess Jools Holland is the closest we get to it. Would have loved to see them do Jackson.

Does any one know where to find the full episode with Blackie McGhee and Sonny Terry?

  • The Seeger show was actually filmed in Newark, NJ at the old PBS studios housed inside Symphony Hall at the time. I saw Cash perform at a sellout show a day or two later at the Hall and he was in worse shape than he is here - he was so pale that they kept a red or blue spotlight during his entire performance and he sat on a stool throughout the show. As bad a shape he was in that night you couldn't keep your eyes off him. He was THAT electric even at his worst!

  • johnny got his bootss off

  • great

  • Too bad you didn't grow up in Chicago in the '60's, on the near north side, by N. Wells, the area known as "Old Town" where folk music abounded!!

  • a true gem

  • Johnny Cash sang this song in Fargo, ND in memory of Peter La Farge. I don't remember if it was the day La Farge died or the day he was buried. I think it was 1965. The Madison Square Garden recording seems much the same. I still get goose bumps.
