The ASEAN leaders meeting with Japan Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama focused on different ways and means to strengthen cooperation on various areas specifically in dealing with global warming, efficient energy use, preparedness against pandemics and cultural exchange.
Japan has pledged to reduce 25 per cent of its green house gas emissions by 2020, and to extend its financial and technical support to ASEAN. Japan's announcement of its ODA amounts to 20 billion US dollars for developing countries in Asia which would help ASEAN integration efforts.
The meeting also put emphasis on developing gap between member countries through a economic forums, like the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) and the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS).
Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo represented President Arroyo during the summit.
