Karlheinz Essl performing his legendary Lexikon-Sonate (1992-2008) for computer-controlled piano on the new Bösendorfer CEUS. - Bösendorfersaal Vienna, 12 Dec 2008.

With his left hand on a MIDI controller, Essl controls the intensity of the various structure generators of the Lexikon-Sonate which generate music on the fly, using compositional algorithms that Essl is developing since the 1985 and which are implemented in Max/MSP.

The right hand (hitting on the computer keyboard) can evoke musical figures such as single notes, chords, arpeggios, glissandi, and trills. Furthermore, it also controls the global dynamics and the sustain pedal.

There is a free version of the computer program that runs on any Apple Macintosh computer.

  • Lieber Karlheinz!

Klingt gut, aber wie funktioniert das? Was macht Deine linke Hand, was die rechte u. was der Bösendorfer?

    LG, Reinhard

  • 0:28 f#', 0:35 g', 0:36 d''', b'' und so weiter und so weiter es sind wirklich viele Schwebungen. Man hört es vor allem beim kräftigen Anschlag.
