The Russian Woodpecker was a notorious Soviet signal that could be heard on the shortwave radio bands worldwide between July 1976 and December 1989. It sounded like a sharp, repetitive tapping noise, at 10 Hz, giving rise to the "Woodpecker" name.

  • shortwave nigthmare ! sound like woodpecker

  • What really happened,I cannot say, because although I know a lot about it(the Zone generally),but only as much as a civilian, from another country, born years after it,can know. But,when I put the pieces... it's just too much of a coincidence and an obvious opportunity and obvious choise that a rival would take. And,truth be told, the west did have some pretty good spies and methods for sabotage.

I guess time will tell if I was wrong.

  • @capchio I'm not claiming anything,but...

The whole story about the incident is strange, unfinished and edited too many times. Also,as I heard, most of the managers who ran the experiment are now living in USA.

And in the end, let's face it - this was just a too good opportunity. You take out ChNPP,you take out Duga,Jupiter radio factory,SAM site,Pripyat, and a good part of Soviet economy with it.I say,it's just too much of a coincidence, and an event that would certainly benefit their rivals

  • @didi89s I hadnt ever thought of that....

  • @ganjalf27 There's a good reason for that. They're both rapidly pulsing radio wavelength transmissions, after all.

Not only must those transmissions have been annoying, that has to be one of the most unsightly pieces of engineering on the planet.

  • back in 1981 the woodpecker would appear on our cable tv affecting mostly FM cable recfeption there were many times that year when listening to a the FM and frequently get stepped on by the woodpecker.

  • I like this grid, creepy and don't remember this sound maybe too little. All over the world we can hear this sound several years ago ?

  • @26highstreet soon

  • Bring back the Russian Woodpecker:)

  • @zombiesack there's a lot of SW references in COD games, and a lot of sound samples taken from radio. I don't play it but I monitor radio and my friend played that game and I was like hey! do u know what that sound is? or what that sign over there means..? pretty neat, glad someone recognized how useful SW is.. (to make sounds in games lolol)
