  • @joannegerber ----------->What you are seeing here are establishment of "trade colleges" as u call them in West or "Polytechnic colleges". In Asia, u had only academic Universities that were highly theoretical and then u had blue collar field work. This move by Mao was seen 2 help farmers understand that crop failed because of low nitrogen content in fertilizer (for example) rather than the wrath of the rain Gods.

This was not to make space scientists out of farmers etc.

  • Oops. Just after I wrote that, I saw that the "principal" said that students should be red AND expert. I'm still skeptical, though.

  • "No debes evaluar una escuela..." NO! This movie was based on Mao's line that it was better to be "red" than "expert." In practice, that approach resulted in incompetent political toadies filling posts in universities, factories, etc. It was a disaster for China.

  • "No debes evaluar una escuela por sus edificios o sus célebres profesores, sino por la línea política educativa que siga y los estudiantes que en ella son formados". La escuela del Oprimido.
