DIY Contact Mic - Collin's Lab

It's amazing what a little disk can do ... when it's layered with piezoelectric crystals. Piezo disks are impressively sensitive to vibration and can easily be adapted to work as a contact microphones. The trick is the preamp - a basic circuit used to match the piezo's signal to levels compatible with modern audio gear inputs. The resulting piezo/preamp combo can be used for electrifying an acoustic guitar or simply exploring the lesser-heard world of small sound around us.

I remember doing that when i was a kid with a small key chain pocket organ, came with some sheet music just basic kid song's, I attached a guitar cord to it,then ran it straight into the giutar amp and cranked it full volume with distortion and delay, my mom screaming from the bottom of stair's asking what the hell is that,I replyed back,it's that pocket organ you gave to me,sounded like a church organ exploding sound wave's throughout the home,had to shut it down,you know neighbors.

Soemeone who understand, please answer me! Why do you need the pre amp? It just works when you wire the piezo straight to a jack ...
