i have to confess that i struggle with most of ondaatje's works. but 'anil's ghost' is just like this clear thing that rings through every sinew and pore.. my first copy of it has fallen to pieces. i can't imagine anything more honest than palipana's story. anil's struggle with her past and with her attempts to lose her emotional self seem universal too. i can't say enough about this book. its refusal to take sides and join the fray seem unbelievably courageous to me.
