While bald eagles are quite recognizable, the name "bald" is a bit confusing. Historically, early Americans called these birds "bald headed." At that time, the word "bald" meant "white" rather than without feathers. The scientific name of bald eagle means white-headed sea eagle. And not all bald eagles have the distinctive snow white head and tail. Young bald eagles are dark colored during their first three or four years.
