When I hear about very British kids programs like Postman Pat being popular in Japan, I always wonder if the Japanese kids relate to it as well as English kids because I can't imagine everyday life in Japan looks much like this fictionalised version of Yorkshire.

@MrMarshMallowMan2012 I quickly looked this up after reading your comment and I saw this BBC news article that said it was just the makers of the program that were getting all worried and a Japanese journalist said they were being too sensitive and it wouldn't actually bother Japanese kids even if they did make the 3 fingers/Yakuza connection. Probably just one of those funny news stories that should be taken with a pinch of salt.

@graemeoliver84 ah haha - it was always Lord Fear from Knightmare that scared me lol. But yeah - it's strange.
I read the article on Wikipedia originally (it never went into details though, sadly). But, if you type into Google "Bob the Builder in Japan" the top link should be an article about the Japanese V Western thinking on the subject :) - they altered Bob the Builder for the same reasons believing he "looked like a gangster" lol

@MrMarshMallowMan2012 So Japanese tots know about the Yakuza? When I was very very young I think I used be slightly frightened by Pat's huge nose.

Brilliant. I love the way in these foreign dubs they never change the character/title names (as if there isn't a Japanese word for "postman") , so it goes like "Postman Pat, Postman Pat, nur di hung nur buchi nuya kang"

@MrMarshMallowMan2012 Haha x'D

@CrazzzyBee Yeah, same here haha. It'd be like making Thomas run on electric energy and replacing the famous windmill with a wind turbine, or worse still, a whole FARM of them lol
-
@MrMarshMallowMan2012 Pretty paranoid business, then. Discrimination against three-fingered postmen should be illegal. I love him the way he is :)
-
@CrazzzyBee Well, I ended up here because I read that in Japan, they considered 'digitally' adding an extra digit onto each of Postman Pat's hands, as they were afraid that children would be frightened by him only having three fingers, as it is a common sign that a man is part of the Yakusa, when his little finger has either had to tip taking off, or there is a small stump.
I wanted to see if they'd gone ahead with it, or left Poor-old Pat as he is :)
