The former Porirua Lunatic Asylum has undergone some changes over the years. This clip is a slide-show of part of the grounds and facilities. Apologies for the incorrect date in the titles - it should be May '08, not April.

Why people keep calling them Asylums I will never know, they were known as Psychiatric Hospitals from the 1930's on with. Previous to that Mental Hospitals. I guess it just sounds more horrific.

I remember Porirua Hospital where both my parents worked (I think late 60's, through to early 80's. The place was were kept back in them days and I remembered seeing an old guy going along the road picking up smoke butts of which my father (nurse) commented on the need to roll more smoke. I remembered the church which my cousin was married in but this video clip had brought back some memories for me as a little girl whose parents and relations has worked there.
