When he's playing 316, is there a recorded track playing at the same time? It sounds like a rhythm guitar is also playing while he is. Or is he playing two parts...?

In VHIII the 316 sound was taken too far an inserted into almost every song

You got a point there; I like 316 but songs like that are part of what made VH cool back then, they did stuff like that IN MODERATION. VHIII is not a hard rock album in my opinion, although Fire in The Hole, Without You and One I Want are at least alright songs

Well Neworld, the solo off that album is more like 316, not Eruption. Not trying to imply that you were disgracing the almighty EVH!!!
