Inappropriate title, that's for sure. Not even close to extreme, and not really woodworking either. Heck, they didn't even show the log falling in half!

He's making it a lot harder than it needs to be. If he'd pull that sledge back every time it bounced off the wedge, and pull it into an overhead swing instead of trying to use it like a hammer he'd save a lot of energy.

It's difficult to answer your question in one sentence - I'd like to !
It's to do with fun, skill, history, satisfaction, discovery, creativity, being alive etc.
Having used, and depended on machine tools for 30 years I find this approach refreshing.
I could go on and on but the best thing to do is to try it for yourself. Have you ever done this kind of thing ?
