this is a brief video showing the eink flexible grayscale reflective display at siggraph 2007 in san diego. the display uses electronic ink, consisting of microscopic two-tone spheres that are polarized so that a current can flip them from white to black. when the screen receives no power, it keeps the last image it had displayed for several months. the display works in sunlight since it is reflective, and the new generation of thin-film transistors used to drive the display is thin and flexible enough for the screen to be rolled up around a thin rod.

  • It's probably expensive, but very cool. I imagine it could do wonders for advertising if it was able to be produced for around the same price as printed paper.

  • Dunno if that's possible without destroying the image, since the microspheres are black on one half, and white on the other. There doesn't seem to be much possibility in lots of colors, you could however, probably ask for something other than black and white, like yellow and blue or something.

  • @ReikaiDemon Well just make 3 spheres representing red, blue, green and then mix them accordingly.

  • *update*

new version is RGB & uses actual paper (polymer coating) & is cheap.

The real benefit is that text can now be instantaneously censored (updated) to remove anything that your local fascist corporate government doesn't want published.

  • @reivilo Like.... Touch interface?

  • @bell02 No, that's the point! It's NOT expensive. It's made to be cheap and mass produced. Certain sources indicate that it will be cheaper than conventional paper, and that's the real feat.

  • cool if this is cheaper and mass produced ... it will replace newspaper and there goes the ipad =D ... if its cheaper than oled display ... production crews will use it as animated posters for advertisement who agrees?

  • I had the same question. They had e ink displays on esquire magazines with color but the picture didn't really change. I think, that in the future, a teacher or someone, could pull down an e-ink screen like they would a screen for a projector, but they wouldn't need one. I also think that this technology could allow cellphones to have much larger screens, as well as laptops. They do look fragile, and expensive, so I don't think they are ready yet.

  • Hello Dude, Please could you point me the 3500US$ flexible display kit you have found ? I mean, the web page ?

    Many thanks
