We tok a nice little trip with the viking ship replica Gaia in the Sandefjords fjord. The ship is a replica of the Gokstad ship found in Sandefjord, Norway about 130 years ago.

The trip out the fjord felt a little like cheating, using an engine instead of ores. But the trip back in we sailed. We needed 10 guys to raise the sail.

It was an awesome sight seeing the full size viking ship sail in the fjord.

  • I saw The Gaia when it came to Boston, Massachusetts, some years ago. It was an exciting day, and very impressive!

  • @xdemmons

That's cool. I imagine it would be quite the sight. It's a beatiful ship, and it's impressive that both Gaia and the ships she was based upon, were able to make such long journeys.

Sandefjord is the ships home town, so we see her quite often, but it was only my second time going out on the water on Gaia.

  • Wow, that's nice! You were lucky with the weather, there were bands of rain clouds over Scandinavia on the 26th.

  • The day started out quite gray, with a light drizzle, but on our way out with the boat the clouds parted and the sun started shining.

  • Wish for more video in the rough open seas!

  • I have to agree! The Vikings have gained more respect in the past few years as being more than just barbarians. The design of these ships and their ability to navigate rough seas is still incredible! I have seen the Viking ships in The Vikingskiphuset in Oslo...Wish I could sail on a replica someday!

  • @BoardkilL You are lucky to have gotten out on such a great ship! I was in Norway in 2002 and hoping to go out on a replica Viking ship in Oslo. My cousin Tom who lives there said there used to be a couple of them at Aker Brygge. They weren't there the day we went there and I'm told that the larger ships don't like them taking up their "parking spaces" I am returning to Norway in September, going to both Oslo and Bergen. I hope there will be a Viking ship around when I am there.
